THE BLINDFOLD

One particular day my 16-year-old daughter was irritable and disagreeable so I asked if she had read her Bible yet for the day. She replied that she did not want to read it because she never got anything out of it and it never did any good anyway. My heart became very heavy and I prayed that God would help me to show her the importance of reading God's Word.

That night, in the middle of the night, the Lord gave me a Scripture and I knew what I had to do. Early next morning, before anyone else was awake, I woke my daughter. I blindfolded her and told her I had to do some errands and would be back at lunchtime. I told her not to remove the blindfold until I returned but she had to finish her chores and do her schoolwork.

She grumbled that she could not do that! I told her she would have to figure out a way to get things done. While I was gone and the other children woke up, they had fun trying to lead their sister to trip or run into a wall. When I returned I was surprised to see my daughter sitting on the couch with the blindfold on and her younger brother reading her school work to her.

I took her aside, took off the blind fold and then asked her to read Psalm 119:105, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." I shared with her that when we do not read God's Word, we walk blindly in our lives. We are at the mercy of those around us who want to harm us by running us into walls or causing us to stumble, thinking it is funny. We cannot function without some assistance and the assistance we often get is ungodly. But, if we read God's Word, He makes our way light and we can see clearly to step over the stumbling blocks and walk around the things thrown in our path.

A few days after our lesson my daughter came to me and said, "By the way Mom, I am reading Proverbs. I cried, and thanked God for his wisdom in reaching my daughter's heart.
